Workshop || Art of the Self Portrait

Are we to paint what’s on the face, what’s inside the face or what’s behind it?

– Pablo Picasso

The Self Portrait is a visual diary –a recording the artist presence in time and place, as well as illustrating his/her progression as an artist in himself.

In this session we look at and discuss the art of Self Portrait- from faces on coins to metal engraving on ornamental door, from large format oil paintings to intimate drawings and from formal black and white photographs to present day selfies.  Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Diego Velazquez,  Edvard Munch,  Pablo Picasso, Frieda Kahlo, Helmut Newton, Cindy Sherman, Diane Arbus, Sarah Lucas are some of the artists we will look at among many others.

AGE GROUP:  16+
The workshop is for everyone who wants to extend their appreciation of contemporary art. All you need is a curious mind, a questioning attitude and a desire to “see” beyond the image.
